Don’t Be Surprised at Springtime Surprise
RunDisney’s April event at Walt Disney World is the Springtime Surprise race weekend. Pre-Covid this was a Star Wars race weekend which ended in 2019 (the 2020 race was cancelled) and in 2022, Disney started Springtime Surprise.
The date for this race weekend shifts around in April depending on holidays like Easter and this race weekend can often be easier for registration compared to others (it still sells out but typically not quite as fast as the others). The biggest downside during this race weekend is the potential weather- especially when this event falls further in April as it can be very warm and humid. This might not be a big deal for those who train in warm weather or humidity but it can lead to health challenges for those from cooler climates.
The main difference with this race weekend is that the race distances can technically vary. While weekends like Princess and Wine and Dine always have the 5k, 10k, and half plus a challenge that includes the half and 10k, Springtime Surprise offers more variety and so far, the longest race distance has been a 10 miler (instead of a half or full marathon). AND this is has been the only race weekend where the challenge includes all 3 race distances (5k, 10k, and 10 miler)! This is subject to change but it’s a great value for the challenge.
Theming for Springtime Surprise will change and offers more flexibility- so far we’ve seen fun themes like Zootopia, Hercules, Toy Story, Peter Pan and more.
The 2027 Springtime Surprise race weekend will take place April 15-18, 2027 with registration for the race events opening on July 7, 2026 for general public. The best rates and hotel choices for race weekend would be booking as soon as 2027 WDW packages become available (historically, early June).
